The protein encoded by this gene is a DNA-binding homeoboxprotein and a transcriptional repressor. The encoded proteinappears to repress transcription by recruiting histone deacetylasesto TGF beta-responsive genes. This gene is amplified andoverexpressed in some ovarian cancers, and mutations in this genecan cause holoprosencephaly.
