P2Y6 is a multi-pass membrane protein and P2Y receptor, belonging to the family of G-protein coupled receptor 1 (1). The P2Y family is composed of eight cloned and functionally defined subtypes, including five that are present in human tissues (P2Y1, P2Y2, P2Y4, P2Y6 and P2Y11) (2). P2Y6 is expressed in human spleen, placenta, thymus, intestine, and blood leukocytes and is a receptor for extracellular UDP, UTP and ADP (1). It contributes to microglia activation and their later phagocytosis in CNS, and in the immune system, it participates in the secretion of interleukin (IL)-8 from monocytes and macrocytes. It has been suggested that P2Y6 may play a role in neuroinflammation in CNS (3).
